WALCOT'S Connor Wells gained the biggest success of his career so far with victory in the second round of the National Golden Gloves Championship at Scotch Horn Leisure Centre, Nailsea, writes DAVE VEYSEY.

The 13-year-old Dorcan schoolboy overcame Joshua Connolly of the National Smelting ABC to book his place in the Western Counties Final.

From the opening bell, Wells attacked with fast left jabs and straight rights to force the Bristolian into defensive mode.

The second and third rounds saw the young Swindonian continue the barrage, and Connolly did well to hear the final bell.

The result was a unanimous points win for Connor, who said: "That was the best win of my career so far and now I'm looking forward to the regional final.

"I knew Connolly was a useful boxer, so I didn't allow him to settle and the plan worked well."

Chief coach Harry Scott was delighted with his young boxer's performance saying: "That was the best Connor has boxed since he started and he is building up a good record now. If he wins his next bout he will be Class Two, 50-52kgs Western Counties Champion, which will be a superb achievement."

Joining Connor in the final will be last season's Class One Featherweight Champion Ryan Martin, 13, Tommy McDonagh, also 13, and 14-year-old Joe Buckley. The Western Counties final will be at Donniford Bay in Somerset on Saturday.
