WALCOT'S boxers returned from the Mycon ABC event in Nailsea with two victories from the three bouts contested.

Said Saleem collected his second win from three starts with a points victory over Grant Bullock from the host club.

The two novices shared a close opening round, but, during the second session, Said began to impose himself, landing with left jabs and hard straight rights.

An unanswered barrage of punches during the final round saw the referee administer a standing count on the Somerset boxer, and the Swindonian’s greater fitness and workrate resulted in a unanimous points decision, 14-10, 11-8, and 13-8.

Completing the double was clubmate Shane O’Neill, who defeated Pawel Augustynik, from Taunton, on points in only his second contest.

The 13-year-old found his range from the opening bell to land with fast left jabs and the second period saw him score heavily to head and body and open up a commanding points advantage.

The final round was a more even affair, but O’Neill’s early work earned him a majority points verdict by scores of 20-14, 20-11, and 9-10.

But there was disappointment for debutant Ferdi De Oliveira, 15.

He appeared to have applied most of the pressure during his contest with Jack Reid, from the host club, but the ‘home’ boxer was awarded a unanimous points decision by scores of 10-14, 10-11, and 6-8.

Walcot vice-vhairman John Gallagher said: “All three Walcot boxers were inexperienced and all did the club proud.

“Said and Shane were worthy winners and Ferdi was unlucky not to make it three."
