SWINDON boxer Marlon Reid holds no fear ahead of his fifth professional bout with Reading-based Patrick Mendys.

The local fighter has been paired with the Gambian middleweight by promoter Keith Mayo, who returns to his home town of Torquay with his ‘Coastal Carnage’ event.

And the unbeaten Reid expects to emerge unscathed.

He said: “People keep asking me if I’m nervous going into the fight but I’m really not.

“To me it’s just another fight, and I don’t really feel the nerves going beforehand.

“It’s not being big-headed, it’s just the fact that I’ve been doing it for such a long time.

“It’s a confidence thing.

“As a boxer you have to be confident going into a fight.”

Reid is unconcerned with the potential dangers of his opponent.

Mendys has lost three of his five pro fights to date, and the Swindon scrapper is adamant he will have no problems disposing of the African.

“It’s nothing to worry about,” claimed Reid.

“I’ve seen a video of him doing white-collar boxing before he turned pro.

“I should be fine.”

The build-up to any fight can be a gruelling and extensive test of a boxer’s physical and mental strength, and the preparation for this weekend’s bout has left its mark on Reid.

“It’s been so intense,” he admitted.

“The last couple of days getting the weight off has been the hardest part.

“I haven’t been able to eat properly and can’t have a good meal until after the weigh-in after Saturday.

“But I’ve been pumping through.”

As much as Reid anticipates a fifth consecutive victory in the south west on Saturday night, Mendys will provide the scrapper with a hard-punching test.

But the Swindon fighter has shown an authoritative air since his conversion to pro-boxing, and his glove and footwork should overwhelm his opponent.

Reid demolished his previous two challengers - Ernie Smith and Sherman Alleyne - both inside of two rounds, and puts his successes in the ring down to the way he lives his life outside of it.

“I live life right, live well and box hard, “ he said.

With Reid in such confident and destructive form, Mendys could be in for a pounding.

Marlon Reid fights against Patrick Mendys on the undercard of the ‘Coastal Carnage’ event, at the International Riviera Centre in Torquay.

The headlining fight features Torquay’s Ali Wyatt against Adam Cummings.

Penhill Amateur Boxing Club will present their first show of the season on Friday with 15 action packed bouts.

Topping the bill will be Danny Harris, who takes on Jack Carter from Portland, while Kelvin Young fights Sam Pomprey from Broadplain.

The event’s advance tickets are sold out but Penhill ABC are still encouraging the public to come, with admission on the door priced at £10.

The night takes place at Penhill Royal British Legion.
