THE fireworks came a day late for the packed crowd at Walcot’s boxing show at the Premier Club, Stratton on Friday, writes DAVE VEYSEY.

Leading the explosive action on a 19-bout marathon bill was England Schoolboy International Connor Wells, who won a thriller against Kaz Mahmood from Capitol ABC, Coventry.

The 15-year-old home favourite found his opponent difficult to pin down in a tight opening round and there was little to choose in the second.

But the final two minutes, Wells landed six stunning left hooks and several straight rights to run out a unanimous points victor.

Connor’s younger brother Callum made it a family double as the 12-year-old defeated Tiverton’s Sam Parkins by a unanimous points margin.

A multiple punch combination from Walcot’s Faizen Qamar led to a standing count for Thames Valley’s Lewis Powell in the opening round of their 50kgs encounter.

Powell’s cornerman retired him shortly after for Walcot’s only stoppage win of the evening.

Another Walcot winner was 12-year-old Charlie Jones, who defeated Aron Smart from Wye ABC. In a close and exciting contest, the Walcot boxer edged a majority points verdict.

Arron Henderson, 14, outworked Capitol’s Paul Watson in the latter stages of their close bout to win on a majority points decision.

Also winning by majority points was Mukhtar Khan, 15, who defeated Poole ABC’s Elliot Mason.

Khan’s strength saw him seize the advantage over the battling Dorset boxer to win a close contest.

The final Walcot boxer to have his arm raised by the referee was debutant senior heavyweight Tom Marshall. He overcame a slow start to despatch Capitol’s Will Majemite.

There was disappointment for Western Counties Heavyweight Champion Mark Reynolds.

After a quiet opening minute against Capitol’s Michael O’Hagan, Reynolds ducked into a short right hand which left him on the canvas.

Despite apparently beating the count comfortably, the referee looked into his eyes and waved the fight over.

There was also disappointment for debuting Walcot ladies Samantha Kemble and Helen Sleiman.

Dorcan schoolgirl Kemble,16, edged the first two rounds against Chelsea Allen of Thames Valley ABC, but a poor final round saw Allen take a majority points success.

Helen Sleiman, 19, started well against Karina Webster from Sydenham ABC, but her stronger opponent wore her down as the fight progressed.

Elsewhere debutant Saed Eltuyev, 11, lost to Trowbridge’s Harry Bryant, while 12-year-old Cullum Large was defeated by Sydenham’s Callum James.

Stephen Spelman, 12, put up a typically gutsy performance before losing out to Tiverton’s Jack Knapton.

Fourteen-year-olds Sean Kemble and Taylor Baker both lost exciting contests to opposition from Downend ABC, Bristol.

Rahim Nanji, 15, and Zane Zafor both lost tight bouts while 11-year-old Kieran O’Donoghue did not box after his opponent dropped out.

Chief Coach Harry Scott said: “It was a successful show with a large crowd getting full value for money.

“Connor Wells was the stand out performer from Walcot, with several other good performances by our boxers.

“I would like to thank Gibbs Surfacing for sponsoring the show, and all the other companies who helped us out financially.

“I must thank my coaches and committee, especially Sarah Wicks, Keith Mayo and Wendy Clifton, for all their hard work.”
