Walcot junior boxers Ryan Martin and Tommy McDonagh have been called up to represent England Schoolboys in a three nations event next month.

Scotland and Wales will provide the opposition at the Institute of Sport in Sheffield on June 11-13.

Sixteen-year-old Martin has enjoyed a fantastic season, winning both the NACYP and Royal Navy Junior ABA titles.

“I am delighted to be selected to box for England,” he said. “This will be my second England appearance and I aim to do well.”

McDonagh, 15, also makes his second England appearance, having reached the national schoolboy final three years running, winning once.

He said: “It’s every boxer’s dream to be selected for England. I’m really looking forward to the competition.”

The Walcot club have now won an impressive tally of 20 England vests at all age groups during the past six years.

Commonwealth Games gold medallist Jamie Cox led the way, and Jorgen Cetaj, Danny Bharj, Marlon Reid, Amin Hassan, Connor Wells, Tommy McDonagh and Ryan Martin followed.

Club chairman and coach Dave Veysey said: “People ask me why our club is so successful and I say it’s mainly down to one person, (chief coach) Harry Scott.

“Obviously the boxers have to train hard to achieve, but Harry is in the gym six nights a week throughout the boxing season and four nights a week during the close season.

“His commitment to the boxers is amazing.

“He instils a strict code of discipline in these youngsters which will stand them in good stead in the future.

“The other six coaches, myself, Sarah Wicks, Danny Hughes, Harold Scott, Brian Roberts and Lionel Macrea all play our part and train the lads a couple of nights a week, but Harry is an ever present.

“He also organises his coaching staff very well so everyone is utilised to their full potential.”

Scott was voted ABA coach of the year last season.
