MARC Williamson’s “once in a liftetime” catch made sure Swindon kept their noses in front at the top of the WEPL Wiltshire Division with victory over Winsley.

Williamson’s tumbling, one-handed grab at mid-on to dismiss Winsley’s freescoring wicketkeeper-batsman Brendan Nasser was one of several highlights in Swindon’s 199-run win at the County Ground - and an effort he was certainly proud of.

When asked about the dimissal, which came off the bowling of Dan Harris with the score on 67, Williamson told the Advertiser: “It was a once in a lifetime. He’s their leading runscorer so the big wicket in the match. He’d got himself in, was going quite nicely and got to 15 with a couple of nice cover drives.

“The field was starting to spread and I was pushed to mid-on. Dan chucked up a length ball on leg stump, which he slapped at me - probably five to 20 yards away from me to my left-hand side.

“I got a big diving one-handed catch out and it changed the game to be honest. Once in a liftetime. It was probably an inch or so off the ground, it was pretty good.

“Everyone came running to me, I didn’t move for about five minutes.

“They were never really in it after that and luckily we were able to bowl them out for under 120 and get those extra points which are crucial.”

Batting first after Winsley elected to take to the field, Swindon’s innings was laid a solid foundation thanks to Williamson’s 49, gained momentum courtesy of 68 from Jon Sore and Jake Goodwin’s 76 and finished with a flourish as Andy Staff and Liam Tucker both scored at better than a run a ball to lift the visitors’ target over the 300 mark.

Following the miserable defeat at bottom club Nationwide House on their previous outing, it was the perfect riposte with the bat by the Swindon top six.

“Winsley were quite unlucky to come up against us after last week, to be honest. The top order really did have a point to prove,” said Williamson.

“Myself and Ardil got us off to a steady start and we really pushed on from there.

“Jake and Jon have obviously both been having great seasons and they pushed the score on after drinks and Liam and Staffy batted really well at the end.

“They ran between the wickets incredibly well, even though they’re 30-odd and the oldest in the team.”

In reply, Winsley couldn’t get into any sort of rhythm.

David Miles picked up 3-28 and there were wickets for Nigel Dunstan, Cameron Baden, Harris and Ardil Domingo as Swindon bowled out their guests for just 105 in 31.5 overs.

The County Ground side now have a two-point lead on second-placed Burbage & Easton Royal.

Williamson, like everyone involved in the top-of-the-table tussle, knows it is going right down to the wire.

“All we can do is just keep winning our games and as long as we win every game we should go up,” he said. “We’re not getting ahead of ourselves, we’re just trying to win the next game every week.”
