PURTON are back on familiar ground this weekend, installed as the final barrier between the champions-elect and Wiltshire Division glory.

Last summer, Aaron Lee’s men were pitted against Burbage & Easton Royal in the penultimate game of the season and were unable to stop the villagers from sealing the title and on Saturday, Purton play host to table-toppers Trowbridge, with the aim of spoiling the party.

The odds are stacked against Lee’s men as they take on a team that have won nine of their last ten outings but the Purton captain insists that his side have to believe they can cause an upset.

“We played Burbage with two games to go last year, so we’ve been in this position before. It’s going to be really tough because Trowbridge will be up for it,” said Lee.

“We might have to hope that their overseas player (Leicestershire’s Andrea Agathangelou) is having a week off.

“They’ve got talented players and are top of the league for a reason but we’ve got talented players too and we’ve got to believe that we can cause an upset.

“We know that we’ve been poor this season – there’s no getting away from that.

“And the amount of catches that we’re dropping means that we’ve basically had to bowl people out twice. You can’t win cricket games doing that.

“We’ve got the Whittaker brothers (Tom and Patrick) back in this weekend. They’ve been away for two weeks, so we can’t expect them to come in and hit centuries and take five wickets each but they’re fit young lads, so they’ll improve the squad.”

Elsewhere, Swindon go looking to secure the points to ensure their Glos/Wilts Division survival this weekend when they host Biddestone.

Third-from-bottom Swindon are 22 points clear of the bottom two but Biddestone have won seven in a row.
