SWINDON skipper Andy Staff thinks his side are finding their form at just the right time after securing a convincing 85-run win over Calne at the weekend.

The visitors to Beversbrook won the toss and opted to bat first and looked on course to set an average target before Douglas Baartman hit 82 off 42 balls to put his side in a commanding position.

Despite not being able to see out their overs, Swindon set Calne a target of 201 and soon set about restricting their hosts.

Calne started well but Tom Codling trapped opening batsman Jordan Butler lbw for 54 before Baartman sent Sean Adams and Bhodi Johnston back to the pavilion for a combined 27 runs.

Jake Goodwin was then able to come in and clean up the tail as he claimed impressive figures of 6-20 from his five overs to dismiss Calne for just 115.

“We were really happy after that win,” said Staff.

“We are starting to get a bit of form together and looking solid in mid-table and we are slowly bunching up to the ones above us.

“Dougie is an attacking batsman and can be a bit hit and miss. On Saturday he batted really well and hit some massive sixes but batted sensibly along with it.

“He was explosive but paced his innings well and turned what could have been an OK score of 150 into a very good score of 200.

“We were bowled out with 10 overs to go so we did have a bit of time but that is just the way he bats. If it’s in his area, then he hits it and on Saturday they all disappeared.

“With the ball, Jake bowled really well.

“Dougie got their top two batsman out and then if you are bringing in someone of the calibre of Jake as your first bowling change, then we know we are lucky.

“Jake bowled to the plan and executed it really well.

“We took some good catches in the field as well, which helps, but it was a solid bowling display all the way round.”

The County Ground outfit have now lost just one of their last five outings and Staff is starting to look up the table rather than over his shoulder.

“We looked at Saturday and knew if we won that then it would create a gap between the bottom three or four and ourselves,” he added.

“Realistically, there could be three teams down this season so that puts a lot of those fears behind us and we now look to go forward and catch the ones above us.”
