JOE Breet reckons that Lechlade are enjoying the full benefit of the fierce competition for first-team places at the Manor Ground.

Freddie Martin’s side kept themselves at the top of the Premier Two Glos/Wilts table with a 41-run victory over Gloucester City Winget last weekend and their standout bowling performance came from Tom Barnes, who has battled his way back into first-team contention in recent weeks.

Benny Ellis’ unbeaten knock of 116 also played a pivotal part in Lechlade – who were without captain Martin, who was away on holiday – overcoming Gloucester, leaving Breet to reflect on a host of impressive individual performances.

“I think that having that competition for places is a huge thing – we’ve got a lot of players that are fighting for the same positions,” said the Lechlade man.

“Tom Barnes hasn’t always been in the side over the last few weeks but he took three vital wickets, so it’s great that guys are performing when they get their chance.

“You need that competition for places to be a good side.

“It was a tough game but I think that Benny Ellis’ century won us the game. I wouldn’t say that we were having a wobble but he came in and anchored our innings at an important time.”

Lechlade batted first at the Manor Ground after winning the toss but their first two wickets fell for just 48, with Breet posting a score of 34.

But Brad Dial came in at three and went on to score 67 whilst Ellis blasted a fine unbeaten 116 from just 98 balls to drive the hosts to 268-6.

In reply, Gloucester’s Sizwe Masondo and Jack Cowles both top-scored with 40 whilst Jordan Rouse (36) and Ben Lambert (33 not out) also did their best to hit back but the Lechlade bowling attack was on form.

Barnes led the way with figures of 3-26 whilst only one Lechlade bowler failed to dismiss an opponent as the visitors were bowled out for 227 with four overs to spare.
