PURTON captain Aaron Lee is safe in the knowledge that his team hold their destiny in their own hands but is well aware that there are plenty of rivals in the same boat.

Last weekend, Purton moved up to second in the WEPL Wiltshire division table, 20 points behind current leaders Marshfield, but just 15 points separate Lee’s men and fifth-placed Trowbridge.

In their last five matches of the 2016 season, the villagers have Marshfield, fourth-placed Marlborough, who they host tomorrow, and Trowbridge still to play, allowing for plenty more twists and turns in the battle for top spot.

And Lee is hoping that his team are ready to savour their run-in.

“Where we are is a good position for the club to be in and it’s quite simple for us, really,” said the Purton skipper.

“If we win all of our games, then we should finish top of the league but there are four or five other teams that are probably thinking exactly the same thing.

“It’s going to be exciting and there are some big games to come for us when we play Marshfield, Trowbridge and Marlborough.

“We’re in a positive position at the moment and we’ve got to try and look forward to those matches, because if we win them, then it could take us to the top.”

Purton tackle the first of their remaining crucial encounters on Saturday when they play host to Marlborough, who had won four matches on the trot before their defeat on the road at Westbury last weekend.

Marlborough also ran out 71-run winners when the two teams met at the Savernake Forest Ground back in June, reminding Lee that a testing afternoon could be in store.

He added: “Marlborough is one of those big games and they’ve been on a good run ever since beating us.

“Their overseas (Zwelibanzi Homani) is batting really well at the moment and we’re going to have to be prepared for a hard game.”
