NEW Swindon captain Alex Kill is not getting carried away by his team’s perfect start to the WEPL Wiltshire campaign.

Following on from their nine-wicket success at Marshfield on the opening day of the season, Swindon returned home to the County Ground to welcome local rivals Purton.

And after winning the toss, Kill, who took up the reins from wicketkeeper Andrew Staff over the winter, didn’t need asking twice whether he wanted to bowl or bat first.

“It was definitely a bowl first day,” he said. “The rain we had earlier in the week made the pitch quite tricky to bat on.

“When the coin was up in the air, I was quite nervous. I know that Purton captain Aaron Lee wanted to bowl first too.”

After inviting their visitors to bat first, Swindon kept their lines tight and built up the pressure on a Purton side who had also won their opening game of the campaign when beating Trowbridge last Saturday.

With just 11 runs on the board, Conor Taylor made the breakthrough when bowling Ben Collier (four), who only had one scoring shot in his 20-ball innings.

Collier’s opening partner Adam Woolford was back in the hutch having only scored nine after facing 30 balls after he heard the death rattle when facing Cameron Baden.

Purton did offer up some solid resistance in the middle part of their innings as Tom Whittaker (28 from 62 balls) and Sam Pinchin (13 from 51 balls) frustrated the Swindon attack.

However, the hosts finally managed to remove Purton for a dogged 113 with just 13 balls to spare.

Conor Cleary (3-13) was the pick of the home attack, while Taylor (3-18) and Baden (3-28) also chipped in.

In reply, Swindon knew that they had to play a patient game, although they were able to go at a faster pace.

Opener Chris Aubrey got the hosts on the charge with a relatively brisk 32-ball 24, which included five fours, before Taylor, with a 13-ball 21, and then Adam Tucker’s 15-ball 20 saw Swindon home in the 32nd over with five wickets to spare.

“You can’t really ask for more,” Kill said. “We have played two and won two.

“We have had two god performances and we will look to continue that when we face Warminster next weekend.”

Royal Wootton Bassett’s hopes of making it two wins from two were quickly banished by Great Bedwyn as they lost by 87 runs.

With WEPL Wiltshire cricket returning to the town for the first time in three years, the Gerard Buxton Sports Ground outfit were hopeful that they would be able to follow up their fine opening day win over Warminster.

However, despite a brilliant six-wicket haul from Ben Batchelor as Bassett dismissed their visitors for 209 in the final over, Darren Beasant’s men were unable to follow that up when it was their turn to bat.

Captain Beasant top-scored for the hosts with 28 but they were bowled out in the 38th over for 122.
