SWINDON United Churches enjoyed a fine tour to Devon where they played three matches in three days.

In their opening match at Sidbury, the Wiltshire League Division Three side saw openers Tom Burford (52 retired) and Matt Shadwick (44) give Churches the perfect start on their way to 193-4 from 35 overs.

Skipper Richard Martin led the charge with the ball with three wickets as the Sevenhampton-based side bowled their hosts out for 166. Robert Butcher also picked up two wickets.

The following day, Churches faced Torquay-based side Barton and the visitors posted 260-8 from their 40 overs.

Opener Danny Hunt struck 12 fours and 1 six on his way to 86 runs from just 72 balls and, he shared a 109-run partnership with Matt Shadwick (38).

Wicketkeeper Martin Garstang chipped in with an unbeaten 58, while Martin struck 34.

Alex Smith’s four-wicket haul and two scalps from Burford saw Barton reeling at 70-7, however, the home skipper Ian Jarman then went and struck an unbeaten 102 as his side closed on 204-9.

Against Chelston and Kingskerwell in their final match of the tour, Hunt, who was captain for the day, opted to bowl first.

Two wickets from Martin, and one apiece for Burford and Shadwick meant the hosts never got into the match before Hunt and Smith wrapped up the rest with three wickets each to dismiss Chelston for 149 inside 30 overs.

The Churches pursuit of 150 to win started well with Mark Defty (26) guiding them to 45-1, however, wickets fell at regular intervals to see them dismissed for 131.
