SWINDON host Westbury in a mouthwatering clash between the sides currently on top of the Globe Sports West of England Premier League Glos/Wilts Division tomorrow, writes STUART SMEDLEY.

The visitors currently sit 23 points above Swindon and have been showing little mercy to their opponents in recent weeks, racking up five and six wickets wins as well as a 106-run triumph in their past three fixtures.

When the two sides met in the reverse fixture, Westbury won by a comfortable 54 runs.

But Swindon skipper Darren Beasant said: “I’d like to think we can beat them.

“Last time we were three or four players down but we certainly weren’t uncompetitve. But we’re not underestimating the scale of the challenge. They’ve got lots of potential match winners.”

Swindon - who have won their last four - will be well rested, having had their game at Lydney cancelled last weekend.

But Beasant is unsure whether the break will be a help or a hindrance.

“Our preparations aren’t ideal as some of the lads didn’t get any cricket at all last weekend,” he admitted.

“Sometimes though a break is good as well to get a bit of a rest.”

A win for Swindon would certainly make the final few weeks of the season interesting, but Beasant concedes defeat would see Westbury all but seal the title.

“If we beat them it blows things wide open but if they win that could be that.” he said.

If his side do triumph, they would still likely trail the current leaders, but the pressure would certainly be on Westbury then according to the Swindon skipper.

“There is a monkey on your back when you’re top, but saying that I’d rather be in their position and be 23 points clear.”

“If we’re going to do anything (come the end of the year) we’ve got to win Saturday but as I’ve said we’re not thinking about promotion.”

“Realistically if we beat them Saturday, they’d have to lose another game.”

Lechlade, fresh from their crushing defeat of Wootton Bassett, are looking for their second win in a row, but face a tricky trip to Gloucester City Winget.

With six games remaining, Paul Rowley’s side need just two wins to reach the magic six mark and can put further pressure on their relegation rivals with a victory.

Bassett’s life doesn’t get any easier with a trip to third-placed Biddestone.

Last week was a baptism of fire for newly-appointed skipper Mark Vincent after seeing his side skittled out for just 53, and their survival prospects could well hinge on this match with games running out.
