NOT a single match was played by any of our local cricket sides in the West of England Premier League this weekend as the wet weather intervened.

Goatacre’s match at Westbury in Premier Two was off, while in the Glos/Wilts Division, Swindon did not take on Biddestone as scheduled.

In the Wiltshire Division, Marlborough, Lechlade, Malmesbury were without action while Wootton Bassett’s home game against Nationwide House was cancelled.

Bassett skipper Stef Tyrie was left frustrated by the postponement.

He said: “We can’t get going. It comes to Saturday and it pours it down. It’s absolutely frustrating.

“In the league we’re down to have played 10 games but we’ve actually completed five and had five abandoned.

Meanwhile, Wiltshire Cricket development manager Pete Sykes has played the county’s groundsmen for their work in difficult times so far this season.

He said: “In May we had clubs facing a hosepipe ban and now we have waterlogged pitches.

“I am amazed that as much cricket has been played as it has and the county’s groundsmen need a pat on the back for all their work.”
