SWINDON TOWN: Frustration for Roberts
WINGER Gary Roberts was a frustrated man despite Town’s dominant 4-0 victory over Carlisle on Saturday.
Roberts was handed a start in place of Raffa De Vita on the left of the Town midfield, and impressed on his return to the side as he combined superbly with Andy Williams and James Collins to help Town cruise to victory.
The 28-year-old had a number of chances to score including two efforts at the back post from tight angles, and also saw a shot saved which eventually allowed De Vita to tap home Town’s fourth.
But while the former Huddersfield man was pleased to have earned a place in Paolo Di Canio’s starting line-up, he was frustrated not to find the net himself.
“I had a few chances to score, and to be honest if I was still on the pitch now I probably still wouldn’t have scored,” he said.
“But it is good to be back in the team, and I was more than happy to get a start and hopefully I have done enough to stay in the team.
“But it is a squad game, and we have a big squad and we saw Raffa come on and get another goal, so that shows how tough it is.”
Both Roberts and De Vita have shown flashes of brilliance during the first half of the season, and Roberts is hoping his display has given Di Canio a tough decision to make for next week’s trip to Bournemouth.
“It is a great problem for the gaffer to have, because even though he didn’t start Raffa came on and did well, and he is a quality player, and Matt Ritchie is on the other side too,”
“Having so much quality is only good for the team, and we all want each other to do well. But we all want to play too, so the competition is a great thing for us to have.”
