WROUGHTON chairman Kevin Cook thinks that last weekend’s Wiltshire Senior Cup giant-killing underlined just how far his club have come in recent years.

At the end of the 2012-2013 season, the Wiltshire League outfit were facing up to the very real possibility of going out of business due to money owed to their parish council. The club were bailed out by local car sales dealership Pebley Beach, who saved Wroughton’s 126-year history from debt collectors.

On Saturday, Mark Love’s men pulled off an upset as they beat Sydenhams League Premier Division, Bemerton Heath Harlequins 2-1 in the county cup and Cook was delighted to see his club enjoy a famous afternoon at the Weir Field, little more than a year on from one of their lowest points.

“It was a bit of mismanagement from the former management team. We owed money for pitch hire to the parish council and ended up with a deficit of near £1000,” said Cook.

“There was nothing left in the coffers but in the end, Pebley Beach, who are a local company, paid the debt for us, which we were obviously so grateful for.

“Wroughton FC has been going since 1888 and we just couldn’t let that history go. We lived to tell the tale.

“We ambled around a bit last season but Mark Love has come back to the club and he and his assistant Paul Bowden have brought some good players back to the club.

“It’s great to see where we are now and it’s great for the village too.”

Elsewhere in the Senior Cup, Supermarine Sports were beaten 2-0 at Western League Corsham Town but Southbrook progressed to the second round with a 2-0 victory over league rivals Trowbridge Wanderers.

Meanwhile, Wootton Bassett Town Development were unable to halt Melksham Town Reserves’ charge to the top of the Premier Division table as they were beaten 4-0 at Ballard’s Ash.
