BRADLEY Gray netted an 86th minute equaliser on his return from injury as Swindon Supermarine made it through the second round of the Red Insure Cup with a dramatic penalty shoot-out win at Yate Town last night.

Gray, who had been forced to suffer a lengthy spell on the sidelines with a shin injury, fired home at the death to tie things up at 3-3 and force penalties, with defender Ross Adams blasting home the decisive spot-kick as Marine triumphed 7-6.

Jake Jackson tapped Yate into the lead before Jordan Rogers’ screamer doubled the home side’s lead midway through the first half.

But Dave Webb’s men shell-shocked the Bluebells with a double salve late in the period, with Adams heading home from a corner in the 44th minute before Eddie Stevens made it 2-2 on the stroke of half-time.

Marine lost Joe Shepherd to an ankle knock and goalie Sam Warrell allowed Ross Staley’s corner-kick to slip through his grasp into the net just five minutes after the break as Yate were handed a lifeline.

But the visitors pressed for an equaliser and despite winger Josh Morse limping off, his replacement Aaron Ferris crossed for striker Gray to slam home Marine’s late leveller and force the telling shoot-out.

Elsewhere, Fairford Town’s progress in the Hellenic League Floodlit Cup was brought to a shuddering halt as they were decimated 8-1 at league rivals North Leigh United.

Striker Jack Allan halved the deficit with 22 minutes played after early goals from the hosts’ Alfie Saunders and George Seacole but the latter went on to complete a first half hat-trick, with his two strikes sandwiching another Saunders effort.

In the second period, Matty Woodley, Andrew Gunn and Darren Harris all struck to round off the third round rout and send Gareth Davies’ men packing from the competition.

In the Premier Division, a last-gasp penalty saw Wootton Bassett Town slip to a 2-1 defeat at Ardley United.

Paul Braithwaite’s side, who needed extra-time to claw their way past Wiltshire League rivals Wroughton in the Wiltshire Senior Cup last weekend, took an early lead through top-scorer Dan Bailey’s tenth goal of the season.

But the Oxfordshire hosts restored parity in the second period before firing home the winner from the spot to break Bassett hearts.

Sam Collier’s Shrivenham take a break from their league troubles when they take on Milton United tonight (kick-off 7.45pm) in the opening round of the Berks and Bucks Senior Trophy.
