SUPERMARINE boss Dave Webb lauded his team’s attacking talent as they notched up a thrilling 5-3 victory away at Sholing.

The starting strikeforce of Connor Waldon and Luke Hopper were both on target at Portsmouth Road while substitute forward Ryan Stanners came off the bench to bag a brace. Midfielder Chris Taylor also netted for the visitors.

The five-star display in front of goal took Marine’s tally to nine in their last two games following a 4-1 win at home Clevedon Town a week earlier and helps them continue to claw their way towards the top ten following a difficult first half of the season.

Manager Webb said: “The last three goals we scored were outstanding – they were some really good finishes.

“We did make some errors but offensively, we played some really good attacking football.

“It’s always a tough place to go but we try to play the right way and score goals, and that’s exactly what we did.

“We’ve told the front two, whoever that may be, that they have to function as a pair.

“It starts from there as that allows the midfield to play further forward and it gives the defence less to do.

“I’ve been critical in the past when we haven’t scored enough goals and I asked for three performances against Clevedon, Sholing and Bashley next week.

“We’ve had back-to-back wins and scored nine goals, so I couldn’t really ask for any more.”

It was far from plain sailing for Marine on the south coast though, as they were still 3-2 in arrears with 15 minutes to play.

A Cameron Pirie own goal put Marine behind early on but Taylor levelled things up, lashing home the rebound after seeing a penalty saved when Waldon went down in the box.

Hopper then put the visitors ahead for the first time but goals from Barry Mason and Alex Sawyer either side of the break put Sholing in control.

But Marine upped their game in the closing stages and Waldon hauled them level before Stanners sealed the win with a quickfire double.

Webb added: “Having gone behind and then got in front, to then go 3-2 behind again; for us to stick at it and find a way to win was tremendous.

“I’m really pleased for the lads. Some teams may look at the position in the table and not turn up but I know the character of the players we’ve got here.”

It was not all good news for Marine though, as they lost centre back and captain Ross Adams to injury in the first half and he is now set to miss the home game against Bashley next weekend.

However, Webb was quick to praise the youthful Marine back-line who responded well to the challenge following the skipper’s departure.

“We’ve got another injury as Ross had to go off with a rib injury. I’d imagine he’ll be struggling for next week,” added Webb.

“We had a young inexperienced back four to start with and then we had to go to a back three that was even younger.

“I asked them to step up at half-time and, although we conceded another goal, they did just that.”
