GARETH Davies says that his Fairford Town side have 11 cup finals in their bid to secure promotion from Division One West.

The Cinder Lane side are currently sitting pretty at the top of the table, five points clear of second-placed Easington Sports.

However, Fairford have played four more games than third place Cheltenham Saracens and fourth place Carterton, who trail Davies’ men by six and eight points respectively.

The Reds boss is well aware that he can only focus on what his side are doing – starting with tomorrow’s trip to Tytherington Rocks - and not what is happening at the teams below.

“Given where we finished last season (second-from-bottom) if someone had said we’d be top of the league at the start of January I would’ve snatch their hands off,” Davies said. “We’ve now got 11 games left, and every one is a cup final. All we can do is get as many points as we can.

“If the teams below us manage to catch us with their games in hand then there is nothing we can do about it.”

Having yet to kick a ball in anger in 2016, Fairford’s last game was on December 28 when they defeated Cirencester Town Development 1-0, Davies’ men are facing a sparse February.

“We had a committee meeting this week where we looked at the fixtures – we only had one game at the end of February,” Davies said. “We are hoping to have cup games on 2nd and 9th as well as a game on the 6th,” Davies said.

“It is always nice to have the points on the board, but we do need games to keep the momentum going – it seems so long since we last played.”

Given the break that Fairford have had, Davies will have a near full-strength squad at 2014 Division One West champions Tytherington.

“To be honest we will need them,” the Cinder Lane chief added. “I know we beat them 4-0 earlier in the season, but we had four chances and scored four goals.

“They are a decent little outfit and we have a tough game in front of us and their position in the table (third-from-bottom) is a bit false.”

Meanwhile, Shrivenham will be hoping to pull themselves off the foot of the table for the first time this season when they make the trip to Hook Norton.

Michael McNally’s side are level on points with county rivals New College, who are not in action, and just one point behind Tytherington.
