THE WAIT was worth it for Fairford Sunday as they finally clinched their first league victory of the season last weekend.

Fairford, who won Division Three under the guise of AFC Tap & Barrel last term, had failed to pick up a win in eight attempts leading into Sunday’s clash with AFC Moonrakers at Cinder Lane but they were finally given something to shout about as they broke their miserable run with a 3-0 triumph.

Paddy Cripps, Ashley O’Donis and Chris Balfe came to the fore for Fairford and boosted their chances of moving off the bottom of the table as they moved to within two points of ninth-placed The Windmill.

“I’ve not see the dressing room like that after a game all season, with everyone all pumped up – obviously because we hadn’t won a game,” said manager David Shephard.

“We won Division Three last season but we had a few of the promotion-winning players leave to go to other teams and we’ve also had quite a few injuries too.

“But Chris Balfe has come back now after quite a bad injury and we’ve got people that had left, like Sam Ockwell and Adam Devine, back with us.

“It’s been a tough start to the season but hopefully things will turn around for us now.”

Elsewhere in Division Two, Shrivenham Sunday beat Cleeve Tech 3-0 whilst FS Swindon were 5-1 winners over Chiseldon Sunday.

Greyhound moved to the top of Division One with a 6-0 win over Penhill United whilst Division Four leaders Fox & Hounds Freshbrook suffered a 3-2 defeat at the hands of 10-man Croft Junior.

In the Swindon Sunday League Knockout Cup, Division One FC Walcot saw off Cricklade MTA 3-0 to move into the semi-finals whilst AFC Gas humbled Uruguay Sociedad 9-1 to join Walcot, Greyhound and DPR in the last four.

Elsewhere, Woodlands Edge beat Save on Tyres Athletic 4-1 to progress to the semi-finals of the Bunny Uzzell Memorial Shield alongside FS Swindon, Haydon and Eldene.
