SWINDON Supermarine manager Dave Webb has his sights set on the top of the Southern League Division One South & West table as his side prepare to play host to fellow promotion-chasers Taunton Town this evening.

Saturday’s victory over Slimbridge put Marine within striking distance of the summit after Winchester City made the most of Cinderford Town’s postponement to take top spot, just three points above Webb’s side.

Tonight’s opponents Taunton, who sit just inside the play-off spots in fifth place, have not played since January 22, but boss Webb knows he can’t take them lightly and recognises it is important not to lose.

“Hopefully the game can go ahead and we come up against a side who have got their own aspirations of winning the league or certainly being a play-off contender,” he said.

“Taunton not playing might work in our favour but then again, they might come and be desperate to get the win.

“It is a massive game and if we win that game, it gets us nearer the top position. It is important just to maybe take something from the game and if it is not a win, take a point and not get beat, but we’ll certainly be going for the three points.”

Forward Josh Parsons is a doubt for the clash, having picked up a knock to his ankle on Saturday and Webb is keen to get the re-arranged clash out of the way to avoid a fixture build-up.

“We want to try and play and we don’t want to get the stage where we have too many fixtures piling up,” he added.

“We play twice a week now for the next three weeks, if the weather allows.

“It is a big game but if we can get something from that game and stay unbeaten, then we play Bridgwater, which is another tough game, and then it is Evesham, who have their own aspirations of the play-offs.

“They are coming thick and fast but the confidence within the group is great to see and they know that they are capable of winning every game if they perform to the right level.”
