IT REMAINS a waiting game for Gareth Davies’ Fairford Town side after they completed a straight-forward 2-0 win over Letcombe Sports.

Fairford have one match remaining - Shortwood United the visitors next weekend - and must then await the conclusion to the campaign of leaders Cheltenham Saracens - who head the table from the Cinder Lane men on goal difference - Carterton and Hook Norton, all of whom have several games in hand.

Luke Cordery and Jack Ellis scored in each half to secure Fairford’s 17th win of the season but were made to wait until just before half time to get the lead.

“It took a little while for us to getting going and looking back at it is could have been and should have a few more,” said Davies.

“It was another one of those where you could see that we just had to grind it out.

“They obviously had nothing to play for and they had a little spell for quarter of an hour in the first half where they put us under the cosh a little bit.

“For the first goal Tom Ballard has put it across the face of the goal and everyone has missed it and Luke has got a tap in.

“For the second James Townsend has put a decent ball up and Nathan Gambling has flicked it on with Jack able to finish quite nicely.

“It was just about another three points yesterday and that is all we can do.

“It is the same next Saturday and once we have done that we have to sit back and see what everyone else is doing.”

That wait is ‘annoying’ for Gareth Davies but believes his side must be proud of what they have achieved this season no matter where they finish.

“You’re looking for favours from other clubs,” he added.

“We have come a long way and we have exceeded expectations this year.

“Where we have been on such a run and you enjoy the winning part of it you just want a little bit more.

“If you are sensible and you sit down and think about it, if we get a top four finish then I think it is a massive achievement.

“The players have been outstanding for us this season and have put a lot of hard work in and I think overall we can’t grumble.”

Fairford travel to divisional rivals Cheltenham Saracens in the quarter final of the Bluefin Sports Supplementary Challenge Cup this evening (7.45pm).
