MANAGER Dave Webb says the Wiltshire Senior Cup has taken on extra significance for Swindon Supermarine following their recent elimination from other cup competitions.

Marine saw their FA Cup quest ended at National League outfit Welling on October 1 and were knocked out of the Southern League Challenge Cup four days later.

Webb’s troops managed to avoid a third cup exit in as many games last Saturday as they overcame Slimbridge in the FA Trophy and a fourth different knockout event now awaits the South Marston side this evening.

They host Toolstation First Division side Malmesbury Victoria in the Wiltshire Senior Cup, following the invitation to Southern League sides to compete again this season.

Alongside fellow top-ranked teams Chippenham Town and Salisbury, Marine will be amongst the favourites to lift the trophy at the end of the season and Webb will give the competition his full respect.

“We would like to stay in the competition given that we have gone out of the league cup. We are only in the FA Trophy and the Wilts Senior Cup now,” said Webb.

“We will be doing it properly as I was disappointed last Wednesday, I thought we did enough to win that game. Hopefully we can play well and progress.

“It depends on what the bigger clubs do – how big a priority will it be to Chippenham and Salisbury?

“There are some good sides in it, like Melksham and Highworth, they are all good teams. It’s not a given that we are going to go on and win the competition but it is a competition that we will treat with respect.”

With the games coming thick and fast at present, Webb will use the contest against Vics at the Webb’s Wood Stadium as an opportunity to have a look at some of his fringe players.

“There will be some changes to the team and I said at the start of the month that I will use all of our players in the cup competitions this month and I will do,” said Webb.

“It’s good that I can get players game time and we have got some good players that are on loan at Wootton Bassett at the moment that are doing well and they can come in.

“It’s important for them that they can play for Supermarine in that competition and hopefully force themselves into the first-team squad.”

Elsewhere, Hellenic Division One West side New College are away at Downton, who ply their trade in the Wessex League.

On Wednesday, Premier Division outfit Royal Wootton Bassett Town face a local derby away at near neighbours Purton, while Highworth Town host Wiltshire League team Shrewton United.

Meanwhile, Fairford Town are in action in the Gloucestershire Challenge Trophy tonight and host Longlevens.
