OLD Town United manager Chris Wood sees no reason why his side shouldn’t target winning the Swindon Advertiser Cup after seeing off higher league opposition in the form of Swindon Spitfires on Saturday.

Wood’s side went into the game sitting just four places off the foot of the Division One table due to a lack of games early on, while unbeaten Swindon Spitfires are sat third in the Premier Division.

Despite the sizeable gap, it was hosts Old Town who looked the better team in the early stages and after Wood had missed a sitter, Chris Reade broke down the left before cutting the ball back to Aaron Williams to fire home from the edge of the box 10 minutes in.

Wood then won a penalty when a Spitfires defender handled in the box, which was dispatched by Steven Holland to put Old Town in control at the break.

Having let a two-goal lead slip against Moredon the week before, the nerves were tethered when Spitfires struck back after the break but a mazy run from substitute Jamie Hicks led to Anton Webb netting from close range.

“It was a good result,” said Wood.

“Obviously being the team in the league above us and unbeaten, we did expect a really tough game from them but it didn’t really turn out like that.

“We found we dominated in possession and we could tell that they weren’t really up for the game as much as we were.

“We were winning the first ball, second ball, totally dominating chance after chance.

“We’re really happy as a team to get through.

“We’re looking to try and win the cup because we have good cup history and we usually make the final.

“We haven’t lost since the away walkover on the opening day of the season, where paperwork cost us, and I don’t see us losing.

“We have got a bit of catch up to play in the league but I do think we are going to get stronger as the season goes.”

In the George Thomas Cup, a brace from James Lovell helped Chiseldon to a 5-4 victory over Sportz Central as the hosts came back from a two-goal deficit.

Ben Leonard, Jordan Lea and Morgan Watts all netted as Wroughton ran out 4-0 winners over New Town All Stars, while Stratton Juniors dispatched Swindon AFC by the same scoreline.

In the Premier Division, FC Dorcan were the big winners on the day as Bartek Bys hit a hat-trick in their 6-1 win over Village Inn, while a Levi Kuenen treble helped Deers Leap to the same result against Swindon Centurians.

Unbeaten leaders Tawny Owl were 5-2 winners away to Ramsbury.

In Division One, Lyneham beat Lower Stratton 6-2 at home.
