MANAGER Steve Robertson knows Swindon Town Ladies cannot afford to be so frugal in front of goal after their Women’s FA Cup challenge came to a halt in the first round proper on Sunday.

Town are enduring a tough season in FA Women’s Premier League Southern Division and were unable to find a tonic in the cup as they were beaten 2-0 at lower league Southampton Women, who are currently top of the Southern Region Women’s Football League Premier Division table.

Swindon spurned several good opportunities on their trip to Totton, including a second-half penalty, whereas Southampton made the most of the sights of goal they had by netting twice from set-pieces.

“We had lots of chances and we missed a penalty and a few one-on-ones. We worked really hard and played okay, but you don’t win games by hard work, you win them by scoring goals and they scored two, so they deserved to win,” said Robertson.

“We are struggling in front of goal at the moment and we are lacking a little bit of confidence.

“At 0-0, we missed a one-on-one and that would have put is in control. They then scored a bit of a scrappy goal from a set-piece and they go into half-time with their tails up.

“The second goal was similar to the first and at 2-0, we are chasing the game and it’s difficult.

“We wanted to go as far as we can and I don’t think we did ourselves justice. It’s disappointing but we have just got to focus on the league now.”
