KATY SMITH, who has already qualified with her father Neil to compete at Potters in the world pairs championship event next January, was the most successful of the Smith family last weekend.

The 17-year-old, an England U18 triallist, together with her elder sister Lucy, 19, an England junior (U25) international, competed in Wales at Cynon Valley bidding to win the two places that were on offer there in the Ladies World Match Play Championships at Potters early next year.

Lucy went out in her second round match losing 2-0 to Alison Merrien (Guernsey) but Katy enjoyed a comfortable second round success 2-0 (7-4 10-1) over Cynthia Lee (Essex County).

However, Katy’s hopes of qualifying for another event at Potters hit the buffers in the quarter-finals despite a valiant performance.

She went down in a tie breaker to England junior and senior international Amy Stanton, 21, who has won the World Indoor Bowls Council U25 Championship three years in a row.

Following the South Wales qualifier the Smiths, including dad Neil, then set off for Margate on the Kent coast to take part in the Thanet Open Singles competition.

Katy reached the quarter-finals but then lost to Chris Marchant (Dartford) 2-1.

Neil went out in the last 16 to Paul Reynolds (Herga, Harrow) 2-1, while Lucy lost her opening match 2-0 to Mark Nullmeyers.
