A QUICK fire start saw Swindon Spitfires secured a 3-1 win at Truro City in the second qualifying round of the FA Women's Cup.

Attacking from the off Karyn Coombs had the first chance, firing over after three minutes, before Katie Wadey gave Spitfires the lead a minute later after she latched onto a Sammie Smith delivery from the right to finish past Beth Willshaw.

The lead was double in the eighth minute when some good Spitfires pressure saw Morgan Whitaker thread the ball out to the right wing for Beth Turner to cut in and find the back of the net.

But just a minute later Truro reduced the deficit with a defence splitting pass that Sasha Sparkes finished despite Spitfires' keeper Julia Caton getting a hand to it.

After that Spitfires absorbed some further Truro pressure before starting to settle down, and Jenny Grey fired wide on 17 minutes from a Debbie Rose throw in. Whitaker then saw her shot blocked by a defender on 28 minutes with Wadey's attempted lob with the loose ball just clearing the bar.

Truro were kept on the back foot by the pace of Coombs, Wadey and Turner and Spitfires had further chances with Wadey heading an Emma Skinner ball just wide on 37 minutes, a Coombs shot comfortably saved on 43 and another Wadey strike well saved in first half stoppage time.

Truro came out for the second half fired up, and it took a goal-line clearance from Rose to prevent them from equalising after a fumble from Caton. But again Spitfires gradually settled, and were soon testing Willshaw through Wadey again.

Spitfires third came in the 56th minute when Coombs collected from a throw in and cleverly lobbed the stranded Willshaw. A minute later Laura Stallard cleared up a Truro attack before setting Turner free down the right only for Wadey to head the cross narrowly wide.

It was becoming a real ding-dong of a game with Truro battling hard to get back into it with Caton under pressure but just doing enough to keep the ball out at the expense of a corner or two, and Spitfires always looking dangerous when breaking from the back.

Wadey was denied by a vital tackle just past the hour when clean through and Ria Salleh had a couple of opportunities to make it more comfortable for Spitfires shortly afterwards.

Spitfires finished the game strongly with half a dozen efforts on goal in the last five minutes, including Whitaker heading a corner against the bar, whilst two break-away Truro attacks were mopped up by Smith and Stallard.

Spitfires' reward is an away tie with FA Women's Premier League side Southampton Saints on 2nd November in the 3rd qualifying round.
