ESPRIT Gymnastics can boast three international rhythmic gymnasts after Laura Halford, Stephani Sherlock and Tyler Brummit were all called up to the Great Britain squad.

Halford has experienced an impressive season, claiming three medals at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow before securing Britain’s best-ever finish in the World Championships, placing 44th.

Sherlock joined Halford at both the Commonwealth Games, where she represented England, and the World Championships, where she finished just two places behind the Cricklade gymnast in 46th.

Meanwhile 16-year-old Brummit, who is originally from Portsmouth, has been hailed as a star of the future by her teammate Halford.

“I am really pleased because it means I get to represent GB in international competitions for the next six months,” said Halford.

“I don’t think it was in doubt because I didn’t do the trial competition to get into the squad as I had just finished the World Championships, and my coach (Deb Hows) said that I needed to have rest.

“They said they were going to take my scores from the Worlds and Commonwealths anyway, so I didn’t really have any doubts.

“I think for Steph there was no doubt either. For Tyler, she is an up and coming gymnast and this was her first year as a senior, so she is still building up and I think she is going to be an up and coming gymnast for the future.”

The three girls will now have two training camps, in January and February at Lilleshall Hall National Sports Centre, in Shropshire, where the squad train together for four days.

“We have the top-level judges in the country come to the squad as well and they will be there to help us and give advice because obviously, they know best because they are of the highest level,” Halford added.

“I think it is really amazing that Esprit has three girls in the squad but it is also quite inspiring for the younger gymnasts to see that they have three girls from the same club as them that are in the GB squad so they can train to try and get there as well one day.”
