BROTHERS Kevin and Steve Morgan are to take on some of the country’s top speedsters when they enter the FSRA British Sidecar Championship for the first time this year.

The Swindon-based duo have been racing most of their lives but only took up sidecars two years ago in memory of their father.

The brothers’ father, also named Kevin, was an experienced sidecar racer himself but was tragically killed in an accident at the Isle of Man TT in 2011, alongside his friend Bill Currie.

Kevin explained: “Sidecar racing and motorcycle racing is something we have been surrounded by our whole lives.

“Before the crash, our dad was planning to stop racing and instead help Steve and I progress in the sport by being part of a family team.

“He was a very talented racer and absolutely loved the sport, but we now feel it’s our turn to have a go. We’ve got a hard act to follow but we are determined to do him proud.”

It has been far from plain sailing for the Morgans, though, as the complexities of a sidecar mean they are usually built by competitors themselves.

But now established under the guise of Team Morgan, the duo will follow in their father’s footsteps by competing against the country’s elite when the championship gets under way at Oulton Park in April.

“We have been lucky because this is an unusual sport and you can’t just go into a shop and buy one of these bikes – you have to build one,” added Kevin.

“Last year we upgraded the bike and went and competed with clubs around circuits in the UK.

“That got us accepted to compete in this year’s FSRA F2 British Championship and now we are getting ready to compete at the highest level in our class.”

The Morgans may have earned their place on merit but they will still be one of the most inexperienced partnerships on the grid.

Kevin added: “The ultimate goal is to win the British Championship and we hope to one day do that for our dad.”
