SWINDON fencer Ben Turner was victorious at the National U11 Millfield Leon Paul Junior Series (LPJS).

The LPJS is the country’s main fencing competition that runs events throughout the year at different locations on a grand prix points basis.

After winning five bouts and losing one in the pool stages, Turner was seeded third and received a bye into the last 16.

He then booked his place in the quarter-finals with a comfortable 10-1 success before securing his spot in the last four by claiming the win with seven points to spare.

In the semi-final, Turner had to use a combination of tempered attacks and solid defence to progress into the final after an 8-6 victory.

Against the number one seed in the final, Turner quickly found himself trailing 4-1 after the first period.

The youngster re-assessed his tactics during the interval and went out in commanding form in the second period. His changes in distance and speed of attacks never let his opponent rest and the second period ended with Turner leading 8-6.

In the final session, Turner’s opponent pulled a point back, however, the 11-year-old from Swindon stretched his lead to 9-7 before conceding another point.

However, Turner managed to run the clock down to come away with a hard-fought 9-8 success and the title.
