SWINDON Shock have been forced to wait one more weekend to find out if they will be crowned champions of the National League Division Four South West.

David Colclough’s side have played all of their fixtures and are level on points with Cardiff City, who could snatch the title if they win their rearranged match with RCT Gladiators tomorrow.

A win for Cardiff would see them move two points clear of Shock and claim the league title but if third-placed Gladiators come out on top, Swindon will win the league due to a superior head-to-head record over Cardiff.

Even though his side could miss out on the title, Colclough isn’t too disheartened as he knows his troops will have at least one play-off fixture at home.

“We will wait it out and see what happens. It is what it is. I’m glad they’re playing the game because it means there is no controversy around the whole thing,” said the Shock chief.

“We should finish at least second regardless of what happens. Playing at home (in the opening round of play-offs) is a huge advantage because it means we don’t have to travel.

“Sometimes you have to travel really far and by the time you get there, you’re wiped out, unlike when you’re at home when you sleep in your own bed and everything is familiar.”

Last weekend, the New College-based side gave themselves the best possible chance to win the league with a victory over their title rivals in the Welsh capital.

Strong performances from Spencer Wells, Christopher Cole and Antonio Wilburn sealed a 90-72 win for Shock, much to the delight of player-coach Colclough.

“We came out focused. They thought they had it won because we lost in the previous weekend,” said Colclough “You could tell by their actions when we walked in the gym. They showed up a bit late and one of their best players arrived to play with 15 minutes left of the warm-up.

“That made me think they weren’t ready for it. They were trying to dunk in the warm-up and play the intimidation game.

“I was thinking: ‘90 per cent of our players dunk’, so it really doesn’t freak us out at all. We were doing our drills and going about our business.”

After this weekend, Shock will also learn who they will face in the end-of-season play-offs, where they could face a team from any of the four regional leagues at Division Four level.
