THE four D's kept North Wilts' promotion hopes alive after scoring all four goals in a 4-0 victory over second-placed Devizes A at Dorcan.

In complete contrast to last week's 3-2 humbling at City of Bath A in the Avon Division, this was a comfortable, assured display that means a win against league leaders West Wilts A this weekend will take the chase for promotion right down to the wire.

After withstanding some strong early pressure from the visitors, Wilts took the lead when a sweeping move from the back led to Darren Hillier netting his 20th of the season by directing the ball high into the net from a right-wing cross.

A similar move 10 minutes later doubled the advantage, with Damian Holland applying the finishing touch on this occasion.

Devizes continued to press and were only kept at bay until the interval by the impressive trio of goalkeeper Neil Smith and defenders Shaun Montague and Mike Egan.

With half-time reached at 2-0, both sides knew the next goal was crucial.

Devizes again went close with a series of short corners, which the defence and Smith dealt with exceptionally well.

Devizes continued to press and hit the crossbar before another flowing move allowed Dave Smith to sweep in Tim Knott's thundering cross to make it 3-0 and put the result beyond real doubt.

There was still time for Dave Roberts to spend time in the sin bin for a series of indifferent challenges before scoring the fourth, a smart close-range finish, slotted home following the breakdown of a penalty-corner.

Captain Neil Smith siad: "It was a tough game, and Devizes really pushed for goals for the whole 70 minutes and were unlucky not to score.

"But an exceptional team performance saw us home to secure three more points and keep our promotion chance alive."

On Saturday North Wilts entertain top-of-the-table West Wilts A.
