SENIOR Westlecot men and women’s teams both recorded victories this week in the national inter-club Over 60s Double Rinks competitions.

The men grabbed a last gasp 31-30 win over locals rivals North Wilts in an enthralling local derby and fourth round tie.

And the women, who won the Mason Trophy in 2003 and took runners-up spot a year later, travelled to Cotswold (Stroud) and came away with a comfortable 40-33 third round victory.

The men’s match was extremely close throughout and only settled on the 21st and very last end at North Wilts (Chippenham).

Dave Snell’s rink had won at home at Westlecot 18-15 but there were still two ends left away. Hedley Bowen’s quartet was 14-11 down so the match was tied overall at 29 all.

Adie Lloyd’s rink took a single on the 20th end to put North Wilts one up overall but on the last end Westlecot hit back superbly.

They were holding a shot to force an extra end but then Bowen drew in another shot with his second and last wood for a two to give Westlecot a last gasp 31-30, one shot overall victory.

Both rinks led by one shot at 10 ends but were three shots down overall at 18 – Snell trailed 15-14 and Bowen 13-11.

But Snell rallied to claim a three shot win at home and Bowen ensured overall victory with his last end heroics at Chippenham.

Rink honours were also shared at one each at Cotswold in the ladies Mason Trophy third round match.

However, the result was never in doubt as Westlecot were always in charge across the board, They led 24-14 at 10 ends and 36-16 at 15 but Cotswold fought back to cut the final deficit to only 40-33.

The victory was due mainly to the quartet skipped by Wendy Anderson that were in total command throughout. They led 17-2 at 10 ends and 23-3 at 15 before settling for a 17 shots win.

Alongside the first 15 ends were close with Mary Moss’s rink up 6-4 at five ends but 12-7 down at 10 and tied 13-13 all at 15.

But in the last six ends they conceded 12 shots and only collected two to lose by 10, but Anderson’s big win compensated admirably.

In the next round, Zone 9 semi-final, Westlecot women will play old adversaries MidGlos Blue who knocked them out on the last end at this same stage last year, at home on or before December 12.

Westlecot men will now play Thornbury A in the fifth round, last 32 of the competition, on or before December 21.
