MOTOCROSS star Stephen Sword has admitted he can’t wait for his ‘home’ round of the British Championships on Sunday.

The Dumfries-born speedster, who now lives in Swindon, will take to the dirt track at Foxhill on Sunday as leader of the MX2 class, with the championship entering its sixth round of eight at the Wiltshire circuit.

Foxhill is considered by many in the motocross community as one of the best tracks in Europe, if not the world, and the Team Red Bull KTM UK rider counts himself as one of that number.

“I came to watch the World Championship Grand Prix here when I was young and then started racing here at a young age,” said the 29-year-old, pictured above. “I always enjoy coming here, it’s one of my favourite tracks. To live close by and have the British Championship here, it’s quite special for me.

“I’ll have a lot of people come and watch me, so I‘m looking forward to it.”

Sword is hoping he can replicate his winning display at Foxhill in 2008. and deliver another championship round victory for his home crowd.

“Last year was great, I think it was one of the best British Championship rounds of the season,” he said.

“It was the first time for a while (that the championships had been held there), the weather was good, they had a good crowd and most importantly I won.

“I’m hoping I can do the same as last year.. The pressure’s on me to win and make it a good day for everyone, but I enjoy that. “ Sword will compete in qualifying and then two races in his bid to win the meeting, which it is hoped will attract 10,000 people, nearly double the turnout last year.

Other championships taking place at the venue will be the MX1 class and the MXY2 (youth) championship.

Sword has raced at venues including Canada Heights, Kent and Hawkstone Park, Shropshire so far this season as he stretched out a 55-point lead in the standings.

The championships will move on to Duns, Scotland in August and conclude at Landrake, Cornwall at the end of September.
