A stunning birdie-eagle finish clinched victory for Devon’s Julia Norman in the English Women’s Golf South West Championship final at High Post.

Norman and her opponent, 16-year-old Hayley Davis from Dorset, were neck and neck until the par three 17th, where a birdie put Norman clear before she holed an eagle putt on the long 18th.

The event, which brings together the best amateur players in the region, was played over three days, beginning with a 36-hole qualifying competition followed by two days of match-play to decide the overall winner and the winner of second flight.

Second flight winner was Jamie Lee Casling, from Brickhampton Court Golf Club in Gloucestershire, who beat Rosie Davies of Saunton in Devon, in another close fought match. Eighteen-year-old Jamie Lee celebrated her first hole-in-one at the 139-yard fifth hole, while another ace was achieved by 13-year-old Francesca Young, from Ferndown, on the 124-yard eighth hole.

Championship runner-up Davis, also from Ferndown, plays off scratch and won the Katherine Cairns Trophy for the best gross score of 146 over 36 holes on the first day.

The nett trophy, the Fraser Evans bowl, was won by Clevedon’s Lizzie Stephens with 137 – nine under par.

Other winners included Gill Loughrey, from Wrag Barn (Hawkins Senior Vase) and Jo Hodge, from Knowle near Bristol, who won the Intermediate candlesticks for the aged 18-30 category.
