TWO big wins in the Denny Cup and Egham Trophy saw Westlecot open their bid for glory in two of the main national inter-club team events at the weekend in fine style.

The men produced a superb display to beat Clevedon 91-57 in the first round of the Denny, while the mixed team demolished local rivals Fairford 125-46 in the opening round of the Egham Trophy.

Westlecot men certainly extracted sweet revenge for a one shot extra end defeat at the hands of Clevedon last season.

They thrashed the Somerset side, beaten quarter-finalists in the Denny Cup last season, by 34 shots.

Neil Smith’s rink were always in command at home and led 12-4 at 10 ends and finally won by 20 shots.

Alongside Mel Biggs’ quartet struggled and were 20-8 down at 15 ends but fought back well to only lose by four shots.

Away in Clevedon, Dave Snell’s quartet were always ahead.

They led 14-4 at ten ends and eventually won by 12 shots.

Ian Jefferies rink were 12-9 down at 10 ends but roared back to lead 20-14 at 15 and were 22-14 up when the game was conceded.

Westlecot face Thornbury in round two on Saturday, October 31.

RESULTS Home Rink 1: Kyle Anderson, Jamie Titcombe, Gary Morphet and Neil Smith beat Dave Alder 25-7.

Rink 3: Gary Jackson, John Thomas, Barry Sictorness and Mel Biggs lost to John Hick 20-24.

Away Rink 1: Josh Cottle, Hedley Bowen, Tom Walkley and Dave Snell beat Pip Branfield 24-12.

Rink 2: Kevin Embling, Michael Titcombe jnr, John Williamson and Ian Jefferies beat Darren Mason 22-14 (17 ends).

Overall score: Westlecot beat Clevedon 91-57.

Last season Westlecot comfortably thrashed Fairford by 84 shots in round two of the Egham Trophy - the national inter-club mixed tournament.

This year they repeated the dose with another big win over their local rivals, but this time achieving the feat a round earlier, as they romped to a 125-46 victory.

Westlecot took the honours in all four games with the two away rinks skipped by John Williamson and John Thomas winning by an overall total of 67-21.

At home Ian Jefferies powered to a 28-shot win but Dave Snell’s rink found life much harder.

They trailed John Young 10-3 at five ends and were still down 15-12 at 15 ends.

A five on the next put them ahead for the first time in the match and they eventually won by five shots.

In round two, Westlecot will face Cotswold (Stroud).

The tie takes place on Sunday, November 1.

Senior players at Westlecot produced two good victories in the National Over 60s Double Rinks competitions this week.

The men enjoyed a comfortable 23-shot win over Cotswold A, while Westlecot women’s A side - they are fielding two teams this season for the first time in the Masons Trophy - easily beat Gloucester by 19 shots.

In the first round the senior men were taken to the wire by Nailsea but in round two against Cotswold they ran out easy 57-34 victors.

The scores were tied overall at eight ends but then Westlecot moved through the gears and took control.

At home Hedley Bowen’s rink, aided by a six on the ninth end, led 24-16 at 18 ends before adding a further five shots.

At Stroud, Dave Vowles’ rink was 9-9 at 10 ends and only 17-14 at 15.

However, nine shots on the next three ends saw them pull away to a 12-shot success.

They will now face either Malvern Hills or Purnell, who have yet to play, in the next round on or before November 13.

RESULTS Home: Reg Jackson, Denis Holborow, Tony Rivers and Hedley Bowen beat John Davis 29-16 (20 ends only).

Away: Dave Matthews, Jeff Nichols, John Thomas and Dave Vowles beat Bob Thompson 28-18.

Overall score: Westlecot beat Cotswold A 57-34.

The new Over 60s ladies team trailed early on in their home trophy match with Gloucester before pulling away to a healthy win.

Rosemary Nichols’ rink was 8-6 down at five ends but then pulled in 13 shots over the next five ends to lead 19-9. They maintained this advantage to eventually win by 13 shots.

Sylvia Wells’ match was much tighter and her rink only led 21-18 at 15 ends. But then they netted five shots in the next three ends and finally won by six shots.

RESULTS Rink 1: Brenda Hunter, Deanna Gingell, Babs Salter and Sylvia Wells beat K Williams 27-21.

Rink 2: Jill Webb, Val Mortimer, Jenny Vowles and Rosemary Nichols beat Joy Heath 29-16 (19 ends only) Overall score: Westlecot A beat Gloucester 56-37.

This weekend is a busy time for Westlecot bowlers as they take part in three competitive events.

Today the club are playing in the first round of the new Top Club mixed indoor competition away at Foxhill (Aylesbury).

And tomorrow Westlecot men meet Oxford City and County in their second Wessex League match of the season (10am).

They are forced into several changes as youngsters Kyle Anderson, Gary Jackson, Tom Walkley and Josh Cottle (reserve), are all named in the Wiltshire team to play away at Isca (Exeter) against Devon in the Under 25 Inter-County Double Rinks competition.

The Under 25 home rink, consisting mostly of Five Rivers (Salisbury) bowlers, face Devon in the other game at North Wilts (10.30am).
