A NEW snooker tournament is to be launched next month in honour of experienced local snooker coach Norman Dowie.

The Norman Dowie Cup will take place at the 147 Club on Saturday, August 6 and has been created to recognise the impact Dowie has had on raising standards of snooker in Swindon.

Norman’s son Chas came up with the idea and he explained: “I am starting the Norman Dowie Cup as I feel it would be nice for my dad to see all the people who appreciate what he has done for snooker in the town over the years.

“My dad has coached many people throughout his time, including the Paul family who now run the 147 Club. The Paul family have been great by offering all the help they can to hold the event, which just shows the respect they have for my dad.

“My mum passed away from cancer last November and my dad said he would like to do something to raise money for the hospice that looked after her.”

The tournament will be free to enter and the winner and runner-up will each receive a trophy. The 147 Club will also present a special cup with the winner’s name engraved on it.

Registration is from 12.30pm on the day with play to commence at 1pm. The event is open to all standards of player.

Chas added: “It would be great to see players from the past who know Norman as he would love to see them all again.
