THE Dave Firmager-trained Romeo Metro landed the 65th two-year-old British-Bred Produce Stakes at Blunsdon on Saturday night.
Metro, who went off at 6/1, managed to pace up well against hot favourite Mark My Words and led him down the back straight.
From there, the crowd were expecting Words to find a new gear, but it never came.
It seemed as if the final came a couple of days too soon for him, as he lacked the sparkle that made him such a hot favourite.
Words made his move on Metro on the fourth bend, but Metro managed to gain the better ground on the rail, cutting of Words’ line and therefore ending his challenge.
From there, it was game over as Metro beat Mark My Words by two-and-a-quarter lengths in a time of 28.62 seconds.
Firmager, who bred three of the finalists, was delighted at the triumph.
The final capped what was a memorable night, as there was a packed house at the Abbey Stadium to witness top quality racing over various distances.
Local champion Farloe Titan showed the rest of the field exactly why he is a former Arc champion, by winning by nearly five lengths in an impressive 28.69.
Wise Totty, trained locally by Peter Swadden, delivered in the stayer’s event by winning by more than three lengths in 41.59. Another local greyhound, Forest Ted, trained by Kevin Hutton, scored in the 509m event in 30.17.
