DAVID Howell produced a solid back nine at the Open D’Italia in Monza this afternoon as he ended his opening round on two-under-par.

The Swindon ace, who finished runner-up at this event last year, put together a solid front nine as he went out in par without dropping or picking up any shots.

However, as the Broome Manor pro turned for home he dropped his only shot of the day as he bogeyed the 10th.

But the two-time Ryder Cup winner quickly moved back to level par with a birdie on 11.

The 40-year-old then parred 12 and 13 before claiming his second birdie of the day at the 14th.

After another par on 15, Howell then picked up back-to-back birdies on 16 and 17 to move to three-under.

However, the Swindon star then ended the day with a bogey five for a round of 70.
