DAVID Howell got off to an unspectacular start at the Qatar Masters as he carded a one-over-par opening round this morning.

The 40-year-old Swindon star, who finished tied-35 at the at the Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championships last weekend, was back in action in Doha this morning but was unable to make any significant headway in his opening 18 holes.

Starting on the back nine, Howell made par right the way through until the par-five fifth, where a dropped shot saw him add the first blot to his copybook.

A further bogey followed on the par-four sixth hole but the Broome Manor Pro did reduce the deficit on the par-five ninth with a birdie, with his round totalling 73 overall.

Howell tees off his second round at 9am UK time tomorrow.
