DAVID Howell closed the weather-affected Italian Open in Milan, with a level-par round of 71 yesterday.

The Broome Manor member started the final day’s play just outside the top 30 at Parco Reale di Monza and was unable to make ground further up the leaderboard in a largely uneventful final 18 holes golf The two-time Ryder Cup star, who had added a third-round 69 to his best-of-the-week second round of 67 on Saturday, birdied the long opening hole and dropped a shot at the long ninth, but otherwise parred the other 16 holes.

Lengthy weather delays on days one and two, including thunderstorms and heavy rain, meant tournament organisers were playing catch-up for the final two days.

Home player Francesco Molinari nailed a three foot par putt at the last to claim his second Italian Open title.

Molinari finished on 22 under par, with Master champion and Ryder Cup-bound Danny Willett one back.
