GIRLS’ golf is about to get rocking in Wiltshire with the launch of a campaign to inspire new players.

Girls Golf Rocks is all about attracting beginners to have fun, learn a new sport, get active and play alongside friends.

Female golfers from the county squad will act as ambassadors, sharing their enjoyment and inspiring other girls, aged five to 18.

The project tees off with free taster sessions in March and April, followed by coaching courses with PGA professionals, together with all-important support from the ambassadors.

Wiltshire is one of seven new counties to join the national campaign, run jointly by England Golf and the Golf Foundation.

When Girls Golf Rocks ran in nine counties last year, more than 600 girls had a go and in excess of 500 went on to take coaching courses, with more than 230 already taking out some type of membership.

Girls Golf Rocks will launch in Wiltshire with taster sessions tomorrow at Basset Down (1-3pm) and Broome Manor (2-4pm).

There will be further taster sessions at Chippenham Golf Club on Saturday, March 25 (9.30am-11.30am).

Following the tasters, the centres will each offer a five-week coaching course with PGA professionals, when the ambassadors will be on hand to encourage the newcomers.

All the girls completing the coaching courses will be given a US Kids Golf 7-iron to help them get started.

Then, the new players will be invited to a fun day with the ambassadors featuring multi-skills challenges and the chance to play on a golf course.

Sue Dix, the Wiltshire County junior co-ordinator, commented: “We are delighted to launch the programme in Wiltshire this year. We have a great team of girls who are very enthusiastic and keen to get more girls into golf.”

Ambassadors include Seona Mauchline, age 16, who has a handicap of seven. She is the first girl to be junior captain at High Post Golf Club and is also the Wiltshire girls’ captain.

She said: “I’m looking forward to introducing more girls to the sport by being an ambassador. I’ve been playing golf since I was 10 so you don’t have to start really young. It’s fun because you get to meet so many different people as well as playing with your friends.

“As an individual sport, you learn good personal resilience and about how to cope in different competitive situations. Because I am junior captain at my club this year, other skills include things like motivating others and public speaking.

“I also have the honour of being Wiltshire girls’ county captain this year so am looking forward to representing the county at different events.”
