WILTSHIRE slipped to an agonising defeat in their latest Channel League clash against Somerset at Broome Manor.

The match went down to the final hole of the final match out on the course.

A win for the home side’s Jordan Smith would have clinched the victory for Wilts.

Instead though, Smith was beaten one up by the visitors’ Matt Lee and Somerset secured an 8-7 overall triumph.

The seeds of Wiltshire’s defeat were sown in the morning foursomes, which the hosts surprisingly lost 3.5-1.5.

Tom Ruddle and Jack Hiscock were the sole home winners, while Ben Stow and Smith halved with Dave Gregory and Alex Kippen.

But skipper Ali James and vice-captain Kevin Phillips both slipped to 2&1 defeat, with partners Miles Mackman and Sam Matton respectively.

Mackman, Matton, Ruddle, Dave Bauer and Stow all registered singles wins as Wiltshire threatened to turn the match on its head.

But James and Phillips ended point-less on the day and Josh Loughrey halved with Sam Day.

With three wins from four, Somerset are well placed to take the Channel League title this year while Wiltshire will concentrate on the EGU County Finals in September.
