BROOME Manor pro David Howell endured a miserable start to his Castello Masters Costa Azahar campaign in Spain this morning.

In windy conditions at the Club de Campo del Mediterráneo in Castellón, the Swindon star bogeyed the par three 12th after starting on the back nine.

He then got back to one under par following birdies at the 15th and 17th, but a bogey on the par four 18th saw him back at level par.

Another dropped shot on the third followed and an expensive double bogey on the par four seventh made matters worse.

The three over par score of 74 leaves Howell needing an excellent round tomorrow if he is to make the cut.

Play was suspended early this afternoon as winds had reached 40mph, with reigning champion and home favourite Sergio Garcia holding the lead on eight under after the 16th hole.
