KEVIN Phillips joined an elite club of players who have won the Broome Manor Club Championship three times after lifting the 2012 crown.

In tough conditions, Phillips shot 73 gross in the morning and a solid 71 in the afternoon to win on 144.

The men’s runner-up was Santino Vitale (72+74=146) and junior champion James Wiltshire came third in the full event on countback from Vitale.

Wiltshire, who achieved the best gross morning score, had further success by hitting the best nett score over two rounds with 68+70 for 138, to win on countback from fellow junior Matthew Hibbs.

James Queenan was third with a nett score of 139 (68+71) and Lorcan Cole, Lee Thrush and Vitale were equal fourth on 140.

Club captain Paul Turland enjoyed a successful event with a nett 73 in both rounds, to end up 13th on 146 nett.

The senior championship was played on June 19 and top of the pile was Dave Smith, with last year’s winner Peter King the runner-up.

Both scored a gross 83 but Smith won on countback, while the nett title went to Brian O’Toole for his 69.

In the junior event, Wiltshire was champion following his morning round of 72 gross. The runner-up was junior captain Tom Law on 74 and the best nett was achieved by Hibbs.

The ladies’ winner was Sarah Carvell on 169 with 2011 champion Kay Dickinson second on 174.

Four women played a second round to decide the championship, the other contenders being Sue Silto and Theresa Healy.

The best nett score for the first round was achieved by Anna Poon (97-22=75).

Undoubtedly the highlight of the morning’s play was a hole-in-one achieved by Silto on the 170-yard par-three 15th.

The Deacon & Son-sponsored championship was rounded off by a dinner and presentation at the Marriott Hotel.
