SWINDON Wildcats D-man Callum Buglass is hoping to learn a lot when he teams up with the Great Britain under 20s World Championship squad later this year.

Buglass is one of three Cats called up to the squad along with forwards Ollie Betteridge and Floyd Taylor after the trio impressed in the early stages of this season, as well as during September's GB training camp.

The 18-year-old, who representedhis country at under 18 level last year, has had a stop-start beginning to life in Swindon since joining on a two-way deal from the Cardiff Devils, and is currently sidelined with concussion, but is itching to get back on the ice.

“I am proud more than anything. To be representing your country is a massive honour and I am lost for words really,” said Buglass.

“It’s hard to describe. You’re playing against other nations and when you are representing your country, everyone wants to do themselves proud. The games we have are always intense and you get so much experience from them.

“I try to be as careful as I can on the puck and try to do all the basics right and make sure I move quick, because international hockey is really high- tempo.

“In the league, you have got 50-odd games to play over the season whereas you go to the World Championships and it is the final in six games, and you have got to go out hard every game “It is only a short period of time between games and I think it is a bit more tactical because going into the first game of the championship, you are not going to know what the team is going to be like and in the second game, you have only seen the other team play once.

“I couldn’t be happier for us. We all play with each other and all know each other’s games and that can only help us when we get there really.”

Michael Stratford, who has come through the ranks at Swindon and has featured for the Cats EPL team, but is currently with Okanagan Hockey Academy, has also been selected as part of the 25-man squad.

All four will now also feature against the Nottingham Lions in a warm-up game being staged during November.

The tournament takes place in Tallinn this December and runs from Sunday, December 7, to Saturday, December 13, and will see GB face hosts Estonia as well as Korea, Lithuania, Netherlands and Romania.
