SWINDON Wildcats suffered their second defeat on the road to Guildford Flames in the space of two weeks to deny them a perfect weekend.

The Wildcats put up a better fight than they did a fortnight ago but still could not prevent second place Guildford completing a 6-3 victory.

After a goalless first half the game burst into life in the second period.

Guildford took the lead through David Longstaff before Toms Rutkis pegged the hosts back.

David Savage and Matt Towe made the Guildford pressure tell to put the home side in a commanding position but two goals in the last minute of the second period from Alex Symonds and Tomas Kana hauled the Wildcats back level.

Thomas Duggan restored Guildford’s lead for a third time when he scored six minutes into the final period before Towe doubled his tally and Marcus Kristoffersson completed the scoring in the final minute.

For the second time this season the first period ended goalless with the players finding themselves in the net more than the puck did.

Sam Bullas, who had an impressive game the previous evening in Basingstoke, created the first chance when he squared for Adam Harding but the forward could only fire wide, before Jonas Hoog fired over from close range.

Swindon players found themselves in the net on two occasions when Alex Symonds got tangled with a Guildford forward before sliding into Lyle’s net then down the other end Bullas had to pull himself out of James Hadfield’s net when he lost his balance after a shot that was well saved.

Guildford came out the stronger of the two sides in the second period and took a deserved lead when Longstaff was able to fire past Lyle from close range.

Swindon had a clear game pan and were absorbing large periods of pressure before looking to catch the hosts on the break.

That worked in the 28th minute when Swindon broke with Bullas who saw his shot blocked by Hadfield but Rutkis was on hand to fire home the loose puck on the follow up.

Swindon continued to soak up the pressure but it took its toll again in the 35th minute when Longstaff was given too much time on the puck to pick out Savage coming in at speed to fire low beyond Lyle.

The host’s lead was quickly doubled two minutes later when Towe made a bee-line for Lyle’s goal and a fortunate deflection lifted the puck over the net-minder’s shoulder.

Swindon looked out of the game but after Kvetan was given two minutes for boarding and a further two minutes for roughing, along with Shane Moore, who took umbradge to the late hit on Bullas, Swindon were able to haul themselves back into the contest.

Symonds was the first to score for the visitors when he was given too much time on the left and fired first time past Hadfield before just ten seconds later Kana did well to win the puck back before cutting inside and firing a fierce shot past the Guildford net-minder.

After a delay to the start of the third period due to the ice being too wet Duggan fired Guildford back into the lead before Towe got his second of the night six minutes from the end and Kristoffersson wrapped up the win with 59 seconds left on the clock.
