QUALITY over quantity is the aim of the game for Swindon Wildcats player-coach Aaron Nell as he continues his summer recruitment drive.

Having made Tomasz Malasinski his 10th signing for the new campaign, Nell is still getting used to the new task of putting a competitive roster together.

However, having struggled with numbers last season, Nell is keen not to have a large squad for the sake of it as he looks to work with what he has described as a “competitive budget”.

“It has been okay,” said Nell when asked how putting together his team was going.

“There have been some difficulties and there are not many players out there and the top teams always seem to get those players.

“We are working hard and hopefully in the next couple of weeks we can get some new players in.

“There are still players out there and we’ll see what we can do.

“We have obviously got to spend the budget right but we do have a good budget in our league.

“We are not at the top and we are not at the bottom but we will do the best we can with that to make sure we have a good season.”

As this is Nell’s first experience of recruitment he is making sure he is taking the advice of others like Stevie Lyle and Ryan Aldridge to ensure he leaves no stone unturned but admits there could be more players leaving the Link Centre.

“I’m asking lots of questions of people that I trust and we would like to make a few changes but we have got to make sure it is right for the club and we can get better,” he added.

“I don’t really look at other teams to be honest.

“Obviously if we try to sign players and they have gone to another team then I have to look at that but I am just focused on Swindon and getting the best players possible in our budget.

“There will be players that leave and I don’t think we’ll have as big of a squad as we did this year numbers wise.

“We would like to have quality over numbers.

“Last season with four lines it was difficult to manage at some points and I just don’t want that this year.”
