AARON Nell conceded that his Swindon Wildcats team were in no mood to surrender their winning streak in the English Premier League as they stretched it to a fifth game with a 5-3 success at home to Peterborough Phantoms on Saturday night.

The Cats trailed 3-2 at the Link Centre heading into the final period but player-coach Nell hauled them level within a minute of the restart before strikes from Jan Kostal and Sam Bullas wrapped up the victory.

“We didn’t want to give up that winning streak, especially at home, and I going into the third period we were focussed and really ready to go from the off,” said Nell.

“The first five or six shifts we were all over them and we only gave up four shots in the third period and that shows how dominant we were. Because of that, I definitely think we deserved our win.”

The Cats showed their claws after just 10 seconds on the night as Jonas Hoog fired them ahead swiftly after the face-off before fellow import Tomasz Malasinksi doubled the advantage.

However, Phantoms gave themselves a lifeline heading into period two when Martins Susters reduced the deficit before further strikes from Wehebe Darge and former Wildcat Owen Griffiths turned the match on its head.

Swindon refused to roll over, though, and Nell was delighted that they were able to dig deep and find an extra gear when it mattered most.

“The third period we were fantastic but I think the second period was probably the worst period of our season so far – we were really flat. We came out in the third period and put a big performance in and it was very pleasing,” said Nell.

“We were making plays for no apparent reason. We were soft on pucks and we weren’t playing with a purpose.

“We were very, very flat and maybe the worst thing that could have happened was scoring after 10 seconds. It was a fantastic goal but maybe we thought we were going to win and we got shocked in the second period.

“We scored twice in the first five minutes and maybe we thought it was going to be an easy night but it never is against Peterborough.

“Fair play to them, they came back well into the game and their goalie made some big saves but in the third period, we picked up another level and we deserved our win in the end.”
