SWINDON Wildcats D-man Stevie Whitfield reckons there should be no excuses for his side failing to extend their winning home run in the English Premier League on Saturday.

Aaron Nell’s team were beaten 4-1 when they hosted Peterborough Phantoms on February 15 but have won each of their three matches at the Link Centre since.

The Cats have registered 18 goals across those fixtures and ran riot last time they were on home ice as they stung Bracknell Bees 7-0.

Saturday’s opponents, Hull Pirates, travel to Wiltshire desperately out of form, having won just once in their previous seven fixtures.

That game is the only one Nell’s troops have to contend with this weekend as they have a rare Sunday off and Whitfield sees that as the perfect opportunity to put two more league points on the board.

“At home, we have turned a bit of a corner in the last few weeks,” said the 26-year-old.

“For two or three games in a row, we have been pretty good and we have just got to go out there again on Saturday and really go for it.

“With the Sunday off, we can leave it all out there and really try to get the result.

“With the fact being that there one game this weekend, you don’t play the game completely different to what you normally would do – you maybe just work a bit harder.

“Of course, you work hard every time you are out there but when you know you have that rest the next day, you do play with that mentality of giving everything and leaving everything out there on the ice. Hopefully that’s enough for us on Saturday.”

Swindon are in the final throes of the regular season and after the Hull clash, will have just two fixtures remaining the following weekend.

Nell’s side can finish no higher than fifth in the table, although Whitfield thinks it will be form and not seeding that could be decisive come the play-offs.

“The league is pretty much sorted and there’s a little mini league between us, Guildford and Hull where we can all switch around, although Guildford are in the driving seat now after beating us last weekend,” said Whitfield.

“We just have to try to get our wins to keep the pressure on them to see if they do drop points. If they do, then we will just go from there.

“The main thing is just trying to get our form going and trying to get the mentality going where every night, we are desperate to win.

“That is how you are going to get through the round-robin in the play-offs and that’s what we have got to look to do.”
